pheasant shooting

The pheasant (Phasianus colchicus) is not a native species and does not breed well in Britain. Gamekeepers on shooting estates breed and release 36 million pheasants in Britain every year.

Many pheasants that are shot in Britain are buried in the woods because there is no market for them. James Darvill, one of these "sportsmen", wrote in Fieldsports Magazine in 2018, "It's a fact that there is too much game shot for the UK market to handle." He also said "some wounding is always going to happen, but when wounding, rather than clean killing is the norm, then something is wrong".

Pheasants are popular game birds because they are large, they don't fly away until the last moment, and then they go up in the air almost vertically. My mother lives in Kent, in south-east England, next to a wood where pheasants are bred, and every October she gets one cock pheasant and two or three hen pheasants in her garden. They're often still in the area six months later. When I visit, I try to chase them out of the garden because they eat my mother's seedlings and make a terrible noise at 5 o'clock in the morning, but it's very hard to make them go. I have often been seen chasing a pheasant round and round a bush, or throwing sticks at it.

I don't think it's possible to justify pheasant shooting ethically or environmentally. The main environmental problem is lead (the heavy metal). In Europe as a whole, the European Chemicals Agency estimates that 18,000 - 21,000 tonnes of lead shot is fired each year by sportsmen. Now that tetraethyl lead is no longer added to petrol, shooting with lead shot the biggest cause of unregulated lead contamination in Britain.

A YouGov survey in 2018 found that 69% of people in Britain think that shooting birds for sport should be illegal.
